Afghan government officials in the western Char Borjak district of Nimroz province say that Iran doesn’t want a dam to be built in the district
If built, the Kamal Khan dam would only allow about 26 cubic meters of water to get to Iran per second, the officials said.
According to officials construction of the dam would further trigger Iran’s complaints regarding the water availability, as Iran invested huge amounts of money on water in Zabul province in the eastern part of Iran.
“The dam can be built easily and people will help to secure the process. Only a strong determination is needed,” Nimroz provincial governor Ghulam Dastgir Azad said.
The survey of Kamal Khan dam was completed in 1970, and it appears to have been a top priority to Afghanistan’s then-prime minister Mohammad Dawood Khan.
Despite having all necessary equipment provided for the construction of dam, the eruption of the codetta in 1977 prevented the plan from getting implemented.
But when Dr. Najibullah took power in Afghanistan in 1987, all equipment for the construction of the dam was given to Moalim Karim- a Jihadist commander. But, according to Nimroz officials, all the money was looted by him.
The dam came under continuous insurgent attacks after the collapse of Taliban in 2001, Quqnoos correspondent Noorullah Rahmani said.
The construction of the Kamal Khan Dam, according to the officials, should start next year and would create job opportunities for thousands of Afghans.
