A Pakistani suicide attacker, who failed to kill President Karzai’s brother, said Ahmad Wali Karzai deserves to be killed
The Afghan intelligence agency in Kandahar arrested Habibullah, the bomber, who was loitering near Mr Wali Karzai’s office, which was partly destroyed after seven suicide bombers attacked the building last month.
The 19-year old Pakistani national, wearing a black suicide vest, was captured alive Friday morning near the Ahmad Wali Karzai-led provincial council in the southern Kandahar city, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban militants.
Quqnoos’ correspondent Mohammad Masumi saw the suicide attacker, describing him as a squinty eyes teenager, dressed in dark gray clothing.
According to the suicide attacker, he was trained by the Pakistani Taliban in Quetta, a north-western city of Pakistan.
“I was told by a Pakistani Talib to kill Kandahar’s provincial council chief and head of the provincial reconciliation committee and that their assassination would be allowed,” the bomber told Quqnoos’s reporter.
Canadian Special Forces – a unit part of around 2,200 Canadian troops stationed in Kandahar – defused the suicide vest and reportedly took the suicide attacker for interrogation.
Taliban militants have not made any immediate comments on the arrest of the suicide bomber, who was reportedly trained and assigned the mission by the Taliban.
Kandahar and Quetta are on two sides of the Afghan-Pak border, which is illegally crossed by thousands of people every day.
Ahmad Wali Karzai has been frequently attacked over the past few years since being elected as the head of provincial council in Kandahar. He escaped unhurt in all the attempts so far.
