The postponement of Afghanistan Presidential Elections is an obvious violation of the constitution, experts say

The upcoming Presidential Elections of Afghanistan got postponed for three months.

The Afghan Independent Election Commission AIEC announced August 20 2009 as the day of the Afghan Presidential Elections.

According to experts, the postponement of Afghanistan Presidential Elections is an obvious violation of the constitution.

According to Article 61 of Afghan Constitution, “The presidential term shall expire on 1st of Jawza of the 5th year after elections.

Elections for the new President shall be held within 30 to 60 days prior to the end of the presidential term."

The legal experts said, the president remaining in his post after May 20, 2009 is against the Afghan Constitution.

The experts expressed their concerns over the power gap and said, "It is not clear who will take the power when President Karzai leaves the office."
