Troops fire warning shots before opening fire on car carrying policeman
A FOREIGN soldier has shot and killed an Afghan policeman as he approached a NATO-led convoy in a car.
Soldiers travelling in the convoy warned the car’s driver to slow down, but the car continued to approach the convoy, forcing soldiers to open fire, a statement released by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday.
The shots fired by ISAF’s soldiers on Saturday in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah wounded an Afghan policeman, who later died of his injuries in hospital, the statement said.
ISAF said its soldiers had used hand signals, a small flare and warning shots to stop the driver from approaching the vehicle.
Helmand's police chief Colonel Asadullah Sherzad said: "This was an unfortunate incident but I do not blame the foreign forces."
ISAF troops have killed Afghan civilians in the past because passenger cars have failed to heed warning shots fired when the vehicles stray too close to NATO-led convoys.
